MAPREFRA: from a funded project to automated monitoring at the core of the electrolysers by Hyter
13 May 2026 - ProjectsFrom manual operations to automated, precise, and repeatable processes: a new funded project led by Pietro Fiorentini, with the support of MADE – Competence Center Industry 4.0 and MetalWork Automation, has enabled the development of a CE-certified machine that operates directly at the core of the electrolysers by Hyter.
Essential to producinggreen hydrogen (derived from renewable sources), electrolysers are electrochemical devices. The stack is at the heart of them, and it consists of frames: they contain the so-called chemical packs, where the electrolysis reactions take place. Comparing the electrolyser to a car, we could say that the stack is the engine. The MAPREFRA project has focused its efforts here, at the heart of the device.
From the initial goal of automating and optimizing the leak tests performed on every single frame, we have managed to develop a new CE-certified machine. The machine is designed to:
• detect 100% of any frame defects
• improve assembly cycle times
• increase the quality and precision of leak and permeability tests
• provide data traceability, thanks to integration with the MES system that connects, monitors, and controls production processes in real time
Part of the project was also dedicated to studying the ergonomics of the machine, with the aim of reducing risks and physical strain for operators. Thanks to this, any back strain has been eliminated.
The machine has already been tested on the products by Hyter and successfully enabled the transition from leak tests on the entire stack to detailed inspections of each frame, with a positive impact on our competitiveness.

Project funded by the European Union – Next Generation EU and implemented in collaboration with MADE Competence Center I4.0.
