

{"id":21959,"date":"2023-01-03T12:04:58","date_gmt":"2023-01-03T11:04:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fiorentini.com\/?page_id=19927"},"modified":"2023-05-09T12:58:23","modified_gmt":"2023-05-09T10:58:23","slug":"passive-and-active-cathodic-protection","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fiorentini.com\/en\/about-us\/expertise\/cathodic-protection\/passive-and-active-cathodic-protection\/","title":{"rendered":"Passive and active cathodic protection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Cathodic protection<\/strong> is an <strong>electrolytic corrosion prevention technique <\/strong>that is applied to metal components that are in contact with electrically conductive environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially, this involves running a direct current between an electrode \u2013 <strong>the anode <\/strong>\u2013 and the surface of the component to be protected \u2013 the <strong>cathode<\/strong>. The current lowers the electric potential of the metal surface such that it significantly slows down corrosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the technology used, it is possible to implement <strong>passive<\/strong> <strong>cathodic protection<\/strong> with coatings and inhibitors, or <strong>active<\/strong> <strong>cathodic protection using sacrificial anodes or impressed current<\/strong> to counteract faults and gaps in the coating caused during installation or by deterioration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After they are commissioned, these systems must be <strong>monitored<\/strong> to assess their effectiveness and to carry out any maintenance, if required. To this end, <strong>cathodic protection measuring points<\/strong> are identified on the distribution, transport, and storage networks during the design stage. By acquiring the tube-to-ground potentials of the pipeline to be protected, <strong>manual checks<\/strong> can be scheduled on the measuring points.
